چکیده

conclusions monaural and binaural recognition of words and digits-in-noise are impaired in ld children with dichotic listening deficit. it seems that bdsd children show an inter-aural asymmetry in recognition of words-in-noise with poorer performance in the right ear. background previous studies have reported the weakness of recognition of speech-in-noise and dichotic listening deficit in learning-disabled (ld) children. this study aimed at further investigating these two deficits in ld children. methods overall, 33 ld children with dichotic listening deficit from a government rehabilitation center and 39 normal-achieving (nla) children from three elementary schools were selected with the convenience sampling method to participate in this cross-sectional study (tehran, iran). learning-disabled children were categorized in two categories of unilateral dichotic separation deficit (udsd) and bilateral dichotic separation deficit (bdsd). results mean (± sd) of signal-to-noise ratio (snr) for binaural recognition of words and digits-in-noise in ld children (3.5 ± 1.7 and -11.0 ± 2.1 db, respectively) was significantly higher than corresponding means of nla children (1.8 ± 1.1 and -13.8 ± 1.1 db, respectively (p = 0.001)). mean snr of the right ear in bdsd children in recognition of words-in-noise (5.0 ± 1.9 db) was significantly higher than that of the right ear in udsd children (3.5 ± 1.5 db; p = 0.018, d = 0.96).

Speech recognition in multitalker babble using digits, words, and sentences.

The purpose of this mixed model design was to examine recognition performance differences when measuring speech recognition in multitalker babble on listeners with normal hearing (n = 36) and listeners with hearing loss (n = 72) utilizing stimulus of varying linguistic complexity (digits, words, and sentence materials). All listeners were administered two trials of two lists of each material in...

Reliability of dichotic listening using two stimulus formats with normal and learning-disabled children.

This study was designed to establish test-retest reliability of the consonant vowel and digit formats of the dichotic listening test with normal and learning-disabled children between the ages of 7 and 10 years. Between-group differences on ear advantage and total accuracy scores were also examined. The results indicated that both groups showed a right ear advantage and that there were no signi...

Word recognition in multitalker babble measured with two psychophysical methods.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the relationship between psychometric functions for words presented in multitalker babble using a descending presentation level protocol and a random presentation level protocol. Forty veterans (mean = 63.5 years) with mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing losses were enrolled. Seventy of the Northwestern University Auditory Test No. 6 words spok...

Dichotic listening deficits in children with dyslexia.

Several auditory processing deficits have been reported in children with dyslexia. In order to assess for the presence of a binaural integration type of auditory processing deficit, dichotic listening tests with digits, words and consonant-vowel (CV) pairs were administered to two groups of right-handed 11-year-old children, one group diagnosed with developmental dyslexia and an age-matched con...

Word recognition of digit triplets and monosyllabic words in multitalker babble by listeners with sensorineural hearing loss.

In an initial experiment (Wilson and Weakley, 2004), word recognition was assessed with six digit triplets presented at 14 signal-to-babble ratios (S/B) in 2 dB steps. An abbreviated version of the protocol was developed for clinic use involving three digit triplets at 7 S/Bs in 4 dB steps. The purpose of this experiment was to examine the relationship between the two digit protocols with compa...
